Protecting the Rights of Every Child

20th Feb 2026

This week, we were honoured to welcome Chris Quinn, the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, to officially launch the Children’s Rights and Well-being Programme across Derry and Strabane. We also welcomed the Lord Mayor of Derry, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, Tom Cassidy, Director of Children and Families and representatives of the Western Health and Social Care Trust.

This exciting initiative, targeted at Primary 1 pupils, will help pupils learn about their rights and the power of their voice, empowering them to understand the important role they play in school and wider community.

Guests to St. Patrick's were welcomed by our school choir, who filled the hall with the most fabulous music. The audience was left in awe, with a smile on every face. Our pupils then enjoyed a warm meet-and-greet with the Commissioner and the Mayor of Derry, Cllr Ruairí McHugh. The morning finished with a brilliant Q&A session led by our School Council, who asked thoughtful and insightful questions. The pupils were outstanding!

Our visitors were also treated to a lovely cup of tea and a selection of light bites from our fantastic canteen staff, bringing the morning to a close.

A huge thank-you to everyone involved for making this such a memorable occasion. We look forward to embracing this important programme throughout the year!
